#WOW2021 #PowerBi - First 4 Weeks
This week I started to make my way through the Workout Wednesday for Power Bi challenges. This is an awesome extension of the Tableau community to Power Bi, providing challenges weekly to help extend your capabilities in the given software. This is the first year it has been done for Power Bi, so the challenges have started quite easy but I thought I would do them anyway. You can see the finalised report below, but first, a quick summary of the challenges of the first 3 weeks.
The first week we used a data source from data.world of the NCAA football conference financial summaries from 2005-2017. The first challenge was to connect to the data source, make sure the model was created with appropriate relationships and that was it. No visuals were created this week but provided the real basis of Power Bi with a simple data source.
In week 2, we built upon week 1 by adding a custom column using Power Query and creating a basic KPI report on revenues and expenses. Creating custom columns in Power Query can help improve performance, by taking the calculation in to the data model layer, rather than at the time of visualisation. The example in this weeks challenge could easily have been done using a measure as well, so there are two options available.
In week 3, we add some simple interactivity to the report we have created so far by adding a single year slicer to the report page. We stop the interaction with our trend graphs, but interaction with other visuals remain. This allows us to see the finances from year to year, without losing the year to year trend.
In week 4, we now add the ability to drill through to another report page. Drill through is great when you want to explore something further, maintaining some of the filters that have been applied to a visual. In this scenario, we drill through a conference to see the schools in that conference and their financial performance. This is a simple example of the power of drill through, but there is so much more you can do with it.
Here is the report we have created so far. You can interact and also make the report full screen if needed. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below! If you want to try Workout Wednesday, you can find all the challenges so far here.
Join me next time when we will continue to work through the #WOW2021 challenges in #PowerBi!
